5 Common Mistakes When Choosing a Wire Cutting Machine

Selection Guide · 2026

After serving over a thousand customers, we see the same 5 mistakes in machine selection. Avoiding them can save tens of thousands of yuan and years of trouble.

Mistake 1: Choosing on Price Alone

Typical case: Two quotes differ by CNY 15,000 — you pick the cheaper one.

Consequences:

  • Precision only ±0.1mm — can't take on high-end orders
  • Defect rate 2-3× higher; scrap cost exceeds the price gap within a year
  • Customer complaints and returns damage your reputation

Correct approach:

  • First define your product precision requirement (tolerance on the drawing)
  • Machine precision should be 30% better than required (margin)
  • Do the total math: scrap + labor from poor precision usually far exceeds the price difference

Mistake 2: Buying for Current Output Only

Typical case: Current output is 30,000/day, so you buy a 35,000/day machine.

Consequences:

  • 100% utilization — high failure rate, short life
  • Can't take large orders (insufficient capacity)
  • No maintenance window (any downtime affects delivery)

Correct approach:

  • Select for 1.5-2× current output
  • Keep machine load at 60-70% for best economics
  • Consider business growth over the next 2-3 years

Mistake 3: Ignoring Wire Diameter Span

Typical case: You only cut 2mm wire now, so you buy a narrow-range machine; six months later you need 5mm.

Consequences: You must buy a second machine — tens of thousands more.

Correct approach:

  • List all diameters now and in future
  • Choose a wide-range model (e.g. SR12 covers 1-12mm)
  • Or at least leave one step of margin (for 2mm, buy a 1-4mm machine)

Mistake 4: Overlooking Changeover Time

Typical case: Multi-variety small-batch production, but you buy a machine that's hard to change over.

Consequences:

  • Each changeover takes 1-2 hours (straightening, feeding, blades all need readjustment)
  • 3 changeovers a day = half a day's output lost

Correct approach:

  • Multi-variety production → choose servo feeding (parameters stored, one-touch recall)
  • Ask: how long does changeover take? Are tools needed?
  • Surui servo models store 99 parameter sets — changeover in 3 minutes

Mistake 5: Not Considering After-Sales and Parts

Typical case: You pick the cheapest small factory — then can't buy blades and nobody repairs it.

Consequences:

  • Blades must be custom-made — one month wait
  • No one handles breakdowns — a week of downtime
  • The machine eventually scrapped; money wasted

Correct approach:

  • Confirm long-term supply of wear parts (blades, tungsten sleeves, feed rollers)
  • Confirm after-sales response time (Surui: within 24 hours)
  • Confirm warranty (Surui: 12 months on the whole machine)
  • Check whether the manufacturer has real customer sites you can visit
